Vor einem Jahr hatte er es bereits angekündigt und damit Empörung ausgelöst – jetzt lässt Italiens Innenminister Salvini „illegale“ Lager von Sinti und Roma erfassen, um mögliche Ausweisungen vorzubereiten.

Der italienische Innenminister Matteo Salvini hat eine Erfassung von Lagern der Minderheit der Sinti und Roma angeordnet, um einen „Ausweisungsplan“ vorzubereiten und „illegale“ Lager zu schließen. Wie das Innenministerium in Rom mitteilte, wurden die italienischen Präfekten aufgefordert, innerhalb von zwei Wochen Berichte über die Roma, Sinti und andere fahrende Leute in ihren Zuständigkeitsbereichen vorzulegen.

Zehntausende Sinti und Roma in Notunterkünften

Salvini ist Vorsitzender der rechtsradikalen und fremdenfeindlichen Lega-Partei. Sinti und Roma sind in zahlreichen europäischen Ländern eine Minderheit. Ein Teil von ihnen lebt seit Jahrhunderten in Lagern und auf Wanderschaft. Die Zahl der Sinti und Roma in Italien wird vom Europarat auf 120.000 bis 180.000 geschätzt. Etwa die Hälfte von ihnen hat demnach die italienische Staatsbürgerschaft, einen regulären Wohnsitz und Arbeitsplatz. Die Unterstützergruppe Associazione 21 Luglio gab 2017 einen Bericht heraus, in dem die Zahl der Sinti und Roma, die in Italien in Lagern oder Notunterkünften lebten, auf 26.000 veranschlagt wurde.

At the same time, these bodies have been and continue to be marginalized within the sphere of art. My contribution to this volume highlights the art and activist works of two artists of Romani descent who point to and inhabit those bodies in danger: Marika Schmiedt from Austria and Lidija Mirkovic, from Serbia and currently based in Germany.“

Abstract
Both academic and popular culture discourses are inhabited by statements that “pathologize” the ways Roma remember the Holocaust and other traumatic events. Against these claims, this article’s main aim is to explore contemporary artistic production from Austria which fosters “Roma will to memory” within an assemblage of political practices and discourses.
To this end, I will explore Marika Schmiedt’s body of artistic memory work from 1999 to 2015, relying on a critical visual approach. The impetus for this exploration is Slawomir Kapralski’s assertion that the actual cases of active remembering and commemoration among Roma and Sinti would render the traditional approach to Roma as “people without memory and history” inaccurate. As this case study shows, there is no such a thing as “Roma indifference to recollection,” but rather, the testimony about the traumatic past is silenced or obstructed by the lack of the infrastructure, the bureaucracy of the archives, and the strategic forgetting politics.

He added that “neither Hungarian communities nor the Hungarian government have decided whether Hungarian-speaking gypsies living outside Hungary’s borders are a burden or an asset.”

Balog also raised the question of whether an integrated school system is really the best thing for Hungary, and whether separate schools should be founded for Roma children with their own educational programs.“
